Iron Kid Duathlon - COMPLETED
A fun and FREE event to be held in The Lakes Estate subdivision Tauriko for years 3-8 school students involving swim, cycle and run to promote healthy activity for children. Organized by Sport Bay of Plenty in association with local schools.

More than 300 students plus approximately 500 proud parents and supporters attended this event. Students ( 7 -12 years old) competed in cycle and run events around the Lakes Boulevard. In the school’s relay events, the winning teams were Omokoroa No 1 Primary School and Tauranga Intermediate. Vicki Semple from Sport BOP says as an inaugural duathlon event it was a great success. The location provides a safe environment for students and an excellent viewing platform for spectators. Most importantly…sport was the winner on the day – with the children participating in healthy active outdoor activities…and having a lot of fun.

Lifestyles of the Bay Art Exhibition
A showcase of the many talents of our local area by staging an exhibition that enables artists to come together and celebrate and inspire creativity in Western Bay of Plenty. A unique art exhibition welcoming all forms of art where both emerging and well established artists from the Bay are invited to showcase and compete at the Lifestyles art exhibition which will be held at Creative Tauranga and run from 23 February (6pm launch) to the end of the festival on Saturday 6 March.

Creative Tauranga strives to support and nurture arts in our community and celebrating our lifestyle through art with Kiwi Festival 2010 will bring a sense of pride and new opportunities to enhance our beautiful and bountiful Western Bay of Plenty. ZESPRI Industry Challenge - COMPLETED
Come and watch the ZESPRI Industry Challenge at Centennial Park, Te Puke 1:00pm till 4:00pm.
Kiwifruit industry growers, post harvest facilities and other industry staff come together and celebrate the coming harvest season. Teams battle it out for the coveted ZESPRI Trophy - in top town style events involving some spectacular games.
FREE entry to the park.
Close to 500 staff from the post harvest sector plus teams of other sponsors and members of the public came along to Centennial Park to enjoy a fun afternoon of team events. MC for the day was TV personality Marc Ellis who arrived at the park by helicopter. Marc was supported by ZESPRI promotional characters Hairy Berry and Goldie Rocks. Fifteen teams – 225 competitors- participated in games and activities, some based on technical skills associated with the kiwifruit industry, others just good fun. Prizes were awarded to the best dressed and best cheerleader support team. The winner of the ZESPRI trophy was the Young Growers Team. The ZESPRI Challenge was an opportunity for the kiwifruit industry to celebrate together the beginning of the harvest.



The Grand Banquet - COMPLETD
A very special evening 8:00pm till midnight at the Sebel Trinity Wharf to raise funds for the Child Cancer Foundation. Enjoy bubbles and canapés on arrival then a four course dinner, two complimentary bottles of Mills Reef wine for each table and cheeses, chocolate truffles and coffee.

Winning Chefs from the Plenty of Flavour Culinary competition, led by Sebel Executive Chef Daniel Simpson, will create delicious courses using the very best of regional produce from the land and sea. Harcourts will auction prizes generously donated by local businesses and private citizens.

The best music from the best musicals by the singers and entertainers from “Off Broadway." A truly wonderful evening where ladies and gentlemen can dress to impress and are guaranteed a great night out - and support the wonderful work done by the Child Cancer Foundation in Tauranga.

A fantastic night was held at the Sebel Trinity Wharf, Tauranga. MC was TV personality Neil Waka and guests of honour were Sir Colin and Lady Meads. Sir Colin (affectionately known as ‘Pinetree’) and New Zealand Rugby Player of the Century was guest speaker. Sir Colin shared with the audience stories of rugby highlights and his forthright views on the modern game. A sumptuous 4 course dinner, fine wines from Mills Reef Winery and entertainment by Kiwi Festival Music ambassador Regan, the rising star young singer Jamie Fitzgerald and the best songs from the best musicals performed by the troupe “Off Broadway.” delighted guests. Harcourt’s auctioneer Fiona Kristensen presided over the auction of donated gifts, products and services from many different businesses - all helping to raise funds for the Child Cancer Foundation, Tauranga Branch.



Maketu Kaimoana Festival - COMPLETED
Experience the tastes, sounds and friendship of a true kiwi event when Bay of Plenty’s original seafood festival returns on 27 February from 12noon till 6:00pm.  This culinary and cultural event held in historical Maketu on a site edged by the estuary and shared by some of New Zealand unique bird life brings community and visitors together in a celebration of culture, cuisine, art and music.

Savour the flavours of seafood served in both traditional and contemporary styles accompanied by New Zealand wines, beer and other beverages. Expect to be captivated by an event which epitomizes the spirit of the real New Zealander working to support local community groups.

WOW…what a great day. The weather was perfect, the attraction of wonderful seafood, entertainment and a Maketu community sharing with people from throughout the region, their passion for their seaside town was infectious. This has got to be the best Kaimonana festival you will attend. On stage performances by Festival favourite Peri Kohu plus Kiwi Festival Music Ambassador Regan, family band Sweet Surprise and local band Horybus kept the large crowd entertained. Stunning performance also from Te Puke’s Urban Dance. Street performers keep the children enjoying the day and Aerius helicopters provided the opportunity for rides over the area. And ….like other Kiwi Festival and associate events – this was a GREEN event with efforts made to reduce waste and to promote sustainability and care for our precious Bay environment.

Bay of Plenty Steamer - Auckland, Waikato, Tauranga - COMPLETED

On Saturday 27 February at 12: 15pm take the monster steam train from Auckland, thunder across the rolling Waikato countryside then through the Kaimai tunnel arriving in Tauranga at 6 30pm. Fiesta in the Park - COMPLETED
Come along to a family day 10:00am till 4:00pm in Te Puke ‘The Kiwifruit Capital of the World’. To be held at Jubilee Park, FREE entry. Join in or watch the attempt to beat the current Guinness World Record attempt to peel and eat a kiwifruit PLUS join in other kiwifruit inspired events like Kiwi Strip and Kiwi’s Can Fly. A highlight will be the Iron Chef Celebrity Cook off with Kiwi Festival food ambassador Peter Blakeway.
 
Food and beverages for all to enjoy. Mills Reef wine bar, Te Puke Hotel beer bar, arts and crafts, various displays and rides on vintage cars.
Headlining the music entertainment is two times smokefreerockquest finalist Jayme Fitzgerald. Be sure to ride the World’s Tallest Inflatable Water Slide. There’s more…..you can even take a steam train from The Mount to Te  Puke. What a great day! Something for mom, something for dad, lots of crazy kids stuff.

Free entry to Jubilee Park, the World Tallest Inflatable Water Slide and other games for children and adults, 11 fabulous acts and performance during the day, 42 different sites providing food, goods for sale and promotion and educational information and displays by many different community groups AND a Guinness World Record attempt – the fastest person to peel and eat a kiwi fruit - all contributed to ensure a successful the first ever Fiesta in the Park. Te Puke people were joined by visitors from Whakatane, Rotorua and Tauranga districts, including some passing tourists who were attracted by the opportunity to join a true family day in the park. Forty people took part in the heats for the Guinness World Record attempt, the fastest being Leigh – Anne Spedding in a time of 3.51 seconds – beating the record of 5.3 seconds held by a woman from New York. Application to have the record validated will be submitted to Guinness World Records in London.

Bay of Plenty Steamer –  Mt Maunganui - Te Puke - COMPLETED
The 60 years old lovingly restored monster steam engine JA 1275 will take passengers from Mt. Maunganui in a series of shuttle excursions to Te Puke so that everyone can experience the thrill of travelling on a real steam train and then attend the Fiesta in the Park. FREE entry to the Park.
The first train will leave the Mount (Cnr Maunganui /Hull Rd) at 9:10am with the last train departing from Te Puke at 5:00pm. Return Fares: Adults $39, children 14 years and under is $20. There are also two one way journeys. Adults $25, children 14 years and under is $15. Hundreds of adults and children took the steam train shuttles. Hundreds more lined the road from Hull Rd to Te Puke and on over-bridges to see the monster steam engine and to wave to passengers. The Te Puke railway station was packed with people and vintage cars and horse drawn carts provided rides to Jubilee Park. Teams of supporters and families from the Bay of Plenty Steamers and BOP Netball – dressed in team colours added to the fun. Help from Mt Maunganui Rotary and Te Puke Lions the day was greatly appreciated. It was a day to remember……especially for the many children who had their photograph taken inside the train engine cab with the Mainline Steam engine driver.

One Base Fishing Tournament

ICE Line Careers in Horticulture   
Horticulture New Zealand in association with Priority One INSTEP
 is hosting ICE Line – The Path to Innovation, Celebration and
Education in Horticulture – a horticulture career experience day for Bay of Plenty Secondary School students. The day is held in conjunction with the Bay of Plenty regional competition for the Young Fruit Grower of the Year.

The aim of the event is to provide a careers day experience for years 11, 12 and 13 students, their teachers and careers advisers and introduce them to the range of opportunities in horticulture industry. As well as the important skills and requirements to pick and pack fruit and vegetables, there are many other varied and interesting career opportunities in horticulture.

Bay of Plenty Young Fruit Grower of the Year
This event is a national competition with the aim of inspiring and acknowledging the talent of young people employed in the fruit growing industry. The competion is a day long event in which contestants undertake a range of theoretical and practical activities. The public are invited to come along to see the competition (FREE entry) from 9am until 2:30pm. In the evening is the speech competition and quiz and a very special dinner and awards evening. (This is a ticketed event.)

The winner of the 2010 Bay of Plenty Young Fruit Grower Competition will go forward to the national final. The Bay of Plenty event will be held at Bay Park 9:00am till 10:00pm.

The Bay of Plenty Steamer
Coastal Trip: Steam Train, Classic Planes, ‘River of the God’s – Te Awa Atua – Picnic Excursion
Departing Cnr Maunganui/Hull Rd at 10:00am, the iron horse monster steam engine heads south via Te Puke followed by a brief stop at Kiwi360 for drive by engine photo opportunities. At Otamarakau the steam train bursts onto the Pacific coastline, blue seas and white beaches. Passengers disembark at Matata for a unique picnic experience 12 noon till 2:30pm.

Classic flyers aircraft displays M.A.S.H chopper rides, classic cars, motorbikes, arts and crafts and MORE….Picnic by the newly developed Te Awa Atua lagoon or on the beach – bring your own picnic hamper or purchase food at Matata. Steam train passengers depart at 2:30pm for the journey back to Hull Rd arriving at 5:00pm. Light refreshments, tea, coffee, soft drinks and snack food available on the train. Kiwi Festival Carnival   
After 9 fabulous days of Kiwi Festival, the grand finale is the Carnival– a celebration of global music, arts and dance - when Carnival comes to Tauranga.
